In tech house the bassline is not an accompaniment, it is the lead singer. The kick keeps time, the hats push, but the bassline is the part people hum on the way home. It is also where most unfinished tracks die: eight bars of a root note on every off-beat, no movement, no story. Here is the anatomy of basslines that move a floor, and a method for writing them.
Start from the pocket, not the notes
A tech house groove is a conversation between the kick and the bass. The kick owns the downbeats. The bass lives in the spaces between: off-beat eighths and selected sixteenths. Before worrying about pitch at all, write your bassline as rhythm on one note. If it grooves on one note, it will groove on the right notes. If it does not groove on one note, no melody will save it.
Two rhythm rules do most of the work:
Protect the downbeat. The kick hits it; the bass usually should not. That separation is the pocket. When the bass does land on a downbeat, make it a deliberate event (once per 4 or 8 bars), not a habit.
Swing the off-beat sixteenths. Straight-gridded sixteenths sound like a typing test. Push the off-beat sixteenths late by a few percent and the line starts to walk instead of march. This is exactly what a swing control does; in a piano roll, select the off-grid sixteenths and nudge them right slightly.
Stay in the key, use few notes
Tech house basslines are melodically stingy. Most classics use three to five pitches: the root, the fifth, the octave, and one or two color notes from the scale (the minor seventh and the second are the usual suspects). Pick the key of your track, stay inside its scale, and center everything on the root.
A reliable pitch recipe: 70% root (in two octaves), 20% fifth or seventh, 10% a passing note that leads back to the root at the end of a phrase. The passing note at the phrase boundary is what makes a loop feel intentional; it is the bassline saying "and again."
The 8-bar rule
A one-bar loop repeated eight times is a demo. A real bassline is an 8-bar phrase with a shape. The pattern that runs through decades of dance music:
- Bars 1 and 2: the groove, stated plainly.
- Bars 3 and 4: the groove again, small variation at the end of bar 4 (one note changed, one hit added).
- Bars 5 and 6: the groove.
- Bars 7 and 8: bigger variation or fill into the next phrase, with bar 8 hitting hardest.
Groove, groove, variation, fill. Listeners never consciously notice it and always notice its absence. The fill into bar 9 is what makes a crowd anticipate the next section; make the bar-8 fill noticeably stronger than the bar-4 one.
Sound design in one paragraph
Tech house bass is usually two elements pretending to be one: a clean sub (sine or lightly saturated) carrying 30 to 90 Hz, and a mid bass with the character (saturation, filter movement, a formant or talky quality) living above it. Keep the sub mono and steady; put the movement and the effects on the mid layer. Sidechain both to the kick, just enough that the kick punches through, not so much that the bass gasps.
A 20-minute method
- Find your key (steal it from your chord loop or vocal; the bassline must agree with it).
- One-note rhythm first: off-beat eighths, add or subtract sixteenths until it grooves against your kick. Swing the off-beats.
- Apply the pitch recipe: mostly root in two octaves, a fifth or seventh where the line peaks, a passing note into each phrase end.
- Stretch to 8 bars: groove, groove, variation, fill. Bar 8 biggest.
- Split sub and mid, sidechain both, and resist the urge to add a third layer.
