Your kick has a pitch.
Most producers never think about this. A kick is a thump, a percussion sound, a thing you put on beat one. But almost every kick worth using is a tuned sine-ish tone with a fast decay, which means it has a note, whether or not you know what it is.
If you've ever had a low end that gets muddy no matter how you EQ it, this is usually the reason.
Why it matters
Your kick and your bass live in the same small piece of frequency space. If the kick sits on F and your bassline is in G minor, they're playing different notes at the same time, right on top of each other, forty times a minute.
Sometimes that reads as dissonance. More often it just reads as small. Two low sounds in different keys don't stack, they smear. You end up turning both of them up and getting nowhere.
Get the kick and the bass agreeing on a note and both of them sound bigger without touching a fader. That one took me way too long to figure out.
Method 1: spectrum analyzer
Drop an analyzer on the kick channel. Free ones are fine. Set the response as slow as it'll go so the display doesn't flicker past you.
Loop the kick and watch the low end. You're looking for the lowest strong peak, not the loudest thing overall. That peak is your fundamental, and it's the note your ear reads as the pitch of the kick.
Then match the frequency to a note:

Most club kicks land somewhere between about 40 and 60 Hz, so that octave covers most of what you'll meet. Landing between two notes is normal. Round to the closer one.
The octave doesn't matter for this. If your kick reads 82 Hz, that's E2, and it's still an E.
Method 2: a tuner plugin
Put a guitar tuner on the kick channel and play it.
This works great on 808-style kicks and long tonal kicks, because a tuner needs enough sustained tone to lock onto. It works badly on short punchy kicks, where the tuner will flicker through four notes and give up.
One trick: skip the transient. If your sampler lets you start playback a few milliseconds in, or you can chop the front off a copy, the tuner gets a much cleaner read once the click is out of the way.
Method 3: pitch it up two octaves
This is the one most people don't know, and it's the one I use.
Your ear is genuinely bad at hearing pitch below about 60 Hz. It's not you. Pitch perception falls apart down there, and a kick only lasts a few hundred milliseconds anyway, so you're being asked to name a note from almost nothing.
So move it somewhere you can actually hear.
Pitch the sample up 24 semitones. Two octaves. Now it sounds like a weird little bass blip, but the note is obvious. Hum it. Find it on a piano or a keyboard plugin. Once you've got the name, transpose the sample back down 24 semitones and you're done. The note name doesn't change when you move by whole octaves.
You can do this with any pitch control in your sampler, or with a pitch shifter you bypass afterward. It takes about fifteen seconds and it's more reliable than staring at an analyzer, because you're identifying it the way you identify every other note in your track.
The gotcha: the pitch slides
Here's the thing nobody mentions in the forum threads.
Most kicks have a pitch envelope. They start high and drop fast, and that fast drop is exactly what makes a kick sound like a kick instead of a bass note. So the kick isn't on one note. It sweeps through a bunch of them in about 30 milliseconds.
Which means "the key of the kick" really means the pitch it settles on. The tail. Where it lands after the drop, and where it stays while it decays.
That's the note that overlaps with your bassline, so that's the one that matters. When you're using a tuner or an analyzer, wait for the reading to stabilize and read the settled value, not the first thing that flashes up.
Short kicks are less tonal, and that's fine
A tight clicky techno kick that lasts 80 ms has a much less defined pitch than a long 808. There's barely enough waveform for a pitch to exist.
Don't force it. If a kick doesn't give you a clear reading, it probably isn't fighting your bass much either. The kicks that need tuning are the ones with weight and tail, and those are also the ones that give you an obvious answer.
What to do once you know
Two options, and neither one is more correct.
Tune the kick to the track. Move it to the root of your key, or the fifth if the root feels boomy in the room. Keep the shift small. Anything past about three semitones starts changing the length and character of the sample, and past five it usually sounds like a pitched sample instead of a kick.
Tune the track to the kick. If the kick is perfect and you're early in the arrangement, transpose the whole project instead. Free, instant, and you keep the sound you fell in love with.
If your kick is on A and your track is in A minor, that's the whole thing. That's the trick. It's not more complicated than that.
One note on layers
If you're stacking two or three samples, each layer has its own pitch, and they're rarely the same one. A sub layer in D under a body layer in F will fight itself before it ever reaches your bassline.
Kick Alchemist tunes each layer separately for that reason, so you can pull all three onto the same note and then onto the key of the track. But you can do the same thing by hand in any sampler tonight, and honestly you should try it that way first so you can hear what changed.
